Bob Clyatt's Moog "mood adjustment"

(mirror of http://www.hossimpala.com/moog)

With all the discussion of the Moog Problem Solver for the late model Impala SS, the HOSS folks have pooled a couple of people's talent and brought you this little pictorial of a quick Saturday install.

Ooooh yeah, much better!!
Seriously, this was a very easy install, and made quite a difference in the feel of the car.  The car is Bob Clyatt's with 70,500 miles, always lubed at 3k intervals, but just a very tired idler arm.

While the comparison picture shows the difference in a beefier construction, the real difference was in the hands-on feel.  The old arm would rotate freely just by a swinging motion, the Moog unit took both hands to rotate.

No special tools were needed.  The arm is mounted with a through the frame nut/bolt combination that requires holding one end or the other while removal and installation.  Tapping the underside of the arm next to the tapered pin popped it out of the linkage.  Reseating the tapered pin was easy with a very inexpensive small c-clamp attached under the linkage and over the new arm, just to pull the taper back into the arm while tightening the new (supplied) nut.  The service manual calls for 35 ft lbs torque-so that's what we did!
Thanks to Dan Johnsen for the digital camera work, install assistance, and "mood sounds".
